Playing drum set in a percussion ensemble is a
fun and wonderful way to gain experience. As in any ensemble, by
rehearsing and performing arrangements, you develop an understanding
of such concepts as phrasing, articulation, reading and interpretation,
ensemble playing, musical form, and styles.
The percussion ensemble environment offers a unique
awareness and sensitivity that each player has towards rhythm, time,
and feel. From this experience, you can develop and make adjustments
to your time and feel and personal style by accepting constructive
criticisms from your conductor and ensemble mates.
A drum set performer should try approaching this
setting by playing beats with great clarity and intent. This will
allow for each performer’s rhythms to fit into your rhythmic
framework.
